Where is the transmission filter in an 05 mitsubishi eclipse?

  • I have an 05 eclipse gs (2.4 engine, 37,000 miles). I would like to change the transmission fluid and am going to the dealership to buy it this weekend. But I'm not sure about the transmission filter. I believe it is internal (inside the transmission case), but I am not sure of whether it needs to be changed.

Some people have told me that it does, but others say that since there is a drain plug, there is no need to remove the case and no need to change the filter. Could someone please clear this up for me? Thank you so much.

  • Too bad everyone is wrong. There is a small internal screen. 1999 GALANTS on the F4A41 transmission had a spin on trans filter which was discontinued on the 2000 models. Factory Mitsu trans fluid ONLY. NO OTHER IS COMPATIBLE.

  • All modern automatic transmissions have an internal filter. If it also has a drain plug, it makes it easier to change fluids. My advice is to take it to a transmission shop and have the work done professionally. If you plan on doing it yourself, be prepared to lie on you back and get very dirty. Have or perform this service every two or three years and your tranny will last as long as you own the car.

  • the filter is internal change that [37000 later ] also i'd change fluid and waite on filter change

  • You need to take the bolts off of the tranny pan, like 10-12 of them. Take the pan off and there it is. But at 37000 I would not bother changing it.
