What's "la Willis" is A. Thomas' opera "Hamlet"?

  • The soprano (Ophelia) says : Pale et blonde dort sous l'eau profonde la Willis au regard de feu

  • A 'willi' is a kind of female spirit. 'Willis' were young betrothed (engaged) girls who died before getting married (or were betrayed - or 'jilted' - by their fianc茅s). They rise from their graves every night at midnight and dance until daybreak. If a man is unfortunare enough to encounter the 'Willis' during their rites, he is condemned to dance with them until he dies from exhaustion.

    Nice!
