UEFA Cup Spot for Carling Cup Winner
Also, how long has the League (Carling) Cup been around? Don't squads feel inundated by the number of PL, FA Cup and European matches that they need to play already?

Top 2 in the league = Auto CL
3 & 4 in the league = 3rd Qual. Round CL
5th in the league = UEFA Cup
FA Cup Winner = UEFA Cup ***
Carling Cup Winner = UEFA Cup***
If the Carling Cup winner is already in Europe, the spot is passed to 6th in league. If the FA Cup winner is already in europe, the runner up gets the spot (like Millwall did this year). Only if winner and runner up in both competitions are already in Europe would the spot pass down to the 7th place team.
England only has 7 spots: 4 CL and 3 UEFA Cup.
Four years ago England's 7 spots consisted of 3 CL and 4 UEFA Cup. That changed when England's clubs performed well in European competitions and they received the fourth CL spot at the expense of a UEFA Cup spot.
England has also had clubs qualify for the UEFA Cup through the Fair Play league in the two previous seasons (Ipswich and Man City).
There have not been any entries by English clubs into the Intertoto Cup since Fulham and Villa both entered three seasons ago when they won two of the three available UEFA Cup spots available to the Intertoto Cup winners.
