Rovers @ Cardiff, FA Cup 1/8 [R]

  • So our march to a major trophy starts this weekend. :D
Truth be told, I'd be happy with just getting past the first hurdle in a cup, as our last four cup ventures have been halted from the start. :(

I think we break the cup jinx this time though. If we had run into Cardiff this time last year I'd have some worries, as they had really gotten off to a pretty good start, but this season they are not quite as formidable in my opinion, especially without the presence of Robert Earnshaw.
Aaron Mokoena has been named to the preliminary squad, but I doubt that we'll see him from the start. Otherwise, I'm sure we'll be putting out as strong of a side as we can and really going after this early. A bit of optimism perhaps, but I think we've got a 2-0 win in the making. :)

  • Ya gotta think that Rovers are gonna win this one.

This article shows that Cardiff will be missing their leading scorer, and Inamoto, as well as some other key players.

Supposedly Dickov is carrying a minor knock and I wouldn't be suprised to see him sit. Afterall he did play every minute of the four matches over the holidays. I think Reid is still carrying an injury as well. Other than that though Hughes has sounded like he's treating this as a very important match, which it is. And with Hughes returning to Wales, I wouldn't expect him to field any less than our best 11.

I'd love to seee Mokeana get some action, but highly doubt he'll get a start. possibly he'll come on for Ferguson or someone and play in a defensive midfield role if we get a 2 goal lead in the second half.

    Prediction - Rovers 3-0 Cardiff
    Stead 2, Emerton

Good point on Dickov; If my memory serves me well, I don't think he's missed a single game yet, so he deserves the day off. Knowing him, he may not want to sit this one out for any reason.

I was thinking the same for Mokoena, if we get a comfy lead and it gets into the last 20 minutes, lets give him a go. Too bad Nelsen's paperwork didn't go through in time, as I would have liked to have seen him come on in such a situation as well.

By the way, Mokoena has been given #15, and Nelsen has #29.

  • our main strker (thorne) is out.

i went last sat when we walloped a poor nottingham forest

not going tomorrow as i only travel the 200 miles for the big games

    blooooooobirds

  • i was just about to ask why we haven't really seen the ball yet. Fantastic.

the epitome of a goal against the run of play.

I hope this ends any idea of Mort going back to Tromso on loan.

  • team news, with a couple of interesting changes....Pedersen getting the start today is a breath of fresh air; The kid has been unlucky to not play, but with Emerton and Reid holding the wings down adequately, he was really the odd man out. It would be nice to see Jemal Johnson get some action today, as he has been quality in the reserves this season.

  • Rovers Starters...

Friedel, Neill, Todd, Johansson, Matteo, Thompson, Ferguson, Flitcroft, Pedersen WOW!, Dickov, Stead. Subs: Enckelman, Mokoena, Reid, Gallagher, Johnson.

I guess Soccernet gave me bad info. Was this from Rovers site?

edit- yes they did. They somehow mixed Amoruso and Stead up. Madness.

I was thinking, wtf is Amoruso doing in there? And why are we in a 5-4-1? :D

Yes, it was Rovers site. Amoruso and Stead are easy to confuse

I'd love to see Johnson get some action as he is a yank born in jersey.

I feel bad for Emerton, he was coming into form, missed last years FA Cup match due to suspension, and sounded excited as hell to play...but at the same time giving Pedersen a chance excites me.

  • Well, Villa lost, lets hope that was the one upset for the day.

  • the epitome of a goal against the run of play.

    no kidding.

Glad to see stead starting as well, I doubt Hughes will let him go to Sunderland now.

Thompson with his second assist in two games. He's making the most of his chances...

hey...do you just have audio, or do you have video?

at least we aren't opening with a Prem side this year.

  • at least we aren't opening with a Prem side this year.

    True enough.

    HOLY ********IN ********!!!!

    PEDERSEN! YEAH!

  • Given the location of this game, I really hope I have a reason to make a trip to Cardiff later this year. :D

  • Rovers Starters...

Friedel, Neill, Todd, Johansson, Matteo, Thompson, Ferguson, Flitcroft, Pedersen WOW!, Dickov, Stead. Subs: Enckelman, Mokoena, Reid, Gallagher, Johnson.

  • Pedersen, Bitches!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    :D

    1-0

  • You're right about Dickov.

I think that if Gallagher or Stead gets the start and puts one or two in, that can only help their confidnece. Dickov, as much as he frustrates me from time to time, isn't short on confidence and somehow will find the net. If we can get Stead and some of our other strikers going and brimming with confidence that can only help in league play.

Besides, if come the 70th minute its a tight battle or tie game Dickov can always come of the bench and just get in the box and clean up some junk and get us the win. I just think he would thrive in that sorta situation.

one thing to keep an eye on; if Stead isn't fielded for this one, could it be a sign that he is going to Sunderland? They might not go after him if he is cup tied.

As much as I like Reid's grit and workrate, Pedersen would allow Emerton to go back to the right and give us a natural left footer on the other flank.

And Johnson excites the hell out of me; of course I've not seen him play, but all accounts are very high on him, and with the inconsistency of anyone other than Dickov up front, I say why the hell not give him a go?

  • one thing to keep an eye on; if Stead isn't fielded for this one, could it be a sign that he is going to Sunderland? They might not go after him if he is cup tied.

Supposedly Sunderland asked to take him on loan and Hughes said no. Why Sunderland even thought we'd let him go on loan I have no idea.
