My 2000 Mercury Cougar keeps spitting and sputtering. ?
If that didn't fix your problem, then also change the air cleaner. Again something that should be done at least once a year.
Not yet? Look to see if there is a fuel filter - yeah(replace it). You should be running better. Also check all vacuum hoses. That is those thin ones that lead to and fro on the intake manifold/carburator. Make sure they are not cracked on the ends or rock hard...and that they fit on super tight. If loose, then nip off the last 3/4 inch and reinsert on fresh rubber. I can't think of anything else at the moment that would be causing you grief.
double platinum plugs, as this engine (if its a V6) uses a scavenging spark, meaning the spark plugs will fire on off cycles to clean out the cylinder.
Also if its been 5-6 years since service does that mean you have not
had regular oil changes either?
Change your air filter, fuel filter as well.
Check all your hose connections under the hood. Stumbling can be caused be un-metered air entering the engine(so if you have a air leak in your intake it could cause it as well)
One last thing, the fuel pumps on the V6 models are prone to failure
but I would check that as a last resort.
