Help! she's giving birth right now.?

  • our black lab mix is in labor and already has one pup. what do we do? do we help her?

    what do we watch for?

  • Make sure she is in a safe warm area, keep the bedding clean & plenty of fresh water. It can take anywhere from 5 minutes to over an hour between pups & she may need help removing the bags if this is her first litter. Try to interfere as little as possible & within 24hrs she will finish having her litter. Try & keep track of the placentas there should be 1 for every pup. If she is straining for over an hour & doesn't produce a pup get to the vets & if she doesn't deliver all the placentas also. She will need a big feed when she is finished & will need feeding at least 3 times a day while she is breast feeding.

  • wow after this get your dog fixed. I know i sound like an *** but really this is irresponsible that you didn't even know the dog was pregnant. and being a lab mix your bring more mutts into the world that will end up in pounds.

  • let her do her own thing and when they come out get the sacks of them it may look like she is trying to eat them but she is just trying to get the sacks of coz they cant breath hope every thing goes well

  • Just watch her closely. Do not pull the puppies out. If she struggles for more than 30 minutes on one pup, take her to the nearest emergency vet. Do not let her eat more than two placentas. The puppies need to be towel dried and very warm (in a room about 85 degrees). The umbilical cords need to be cut or chewed by the mother, if she does not chew through it, tie it off about 1/2 inch from the puppies belly and cut it with sharp scissors. Use a bulb sucker (usually for newborn babies) to retrieve excess fluid from their lungs. Just watch the puppies closely so mama does not smash them and if she needs to relieve herself outside... take a flashlight and towels to catch a baby if need be!

  • Enjoy the Miracle but you dont have to do anything, let nature do it.

  • watch them come out. hope you got her in one of those baby swimming pools or something like that. ever had a baby? there will be blood and placenta and membrane and ozzy looking stuff. pat her head speak softly and tell her it is going to be ok. don't move or touch the pups too much..she might eat them. then get her fixed!

  • Let her have her puppies on her own. If you want to, however, when the pups come out you can peel the membrane off of it. If it isn't breathing try to get the fluid out of its lungs with a turkey baster or something that can pump fluids out.

  • Just watch to make sure she passes a placenta after every puppy. It's OK if she eats a few placentas,it is good for her and wil help bring her milk down.Don't let her eat more than 2 or 3 ,though,as it can give her diarrhea. If she doesn't immediately break the sac that the puppy is in and start to clean it,you will have to get the sac off and rub the puppy with a towel, clear it's mouth with your finger and then give it to mom once it starts breathing/crying. When she is through, offer her something to eat and make sure you take her and the pups to the vet within 48 hours to make sure she has no retained puppies or placentas, which can make her very sick,The vet can also check the puppies to make sure they are all healthy. While you are there, you can schedule a time to have the mama dog spayed when the pups are weaned,as there are far too many puppies killed in shelters every day. Feed the mother a good puppy food, all she wants, and plenty of water to make sure she stays in good weight and produces enough milk. You can also give her a dog vitamin and add some cottage cheese or yogurt to her food to make sure she gets enough calcium.Keep her and the pups in a warm room, but not too warm. The pups will need to be wormed at 2,3,4 6 and 8 weeks and get their first puppy shots at 6-10 weeks of age. Then you have to try and find home for those big, mixed breed puppies - and be aware that large, black puppies are the ones most likely to be surrendered to a shelter and he least likely to be adopted. Many black puppies are put to sleep immediately. This is why the mother should have ben spayed to begin with, but it's too late.I just hope you have learned your lesson and will get her spayed and keep any pups that you can't find homes for.

  • YOU DONT NEED TO DO ANYTHING UNLESS THIS IS HER FIRST LITTER, really, sorry bout caps, if it is, help her get the sacs of the babys, and make sure they are crying, if they arnt you will need some towels to rub them and something to suck the fluid out of lungs, or hold them in your hands and thrust them downwards with their head going towards floor. if they all come out fine, then you can just help her clean and warm them.

  • omg omg omg omg omg omg omg!!!!

lol, ok so the first thing that you're gonna do, let the mom handle it, and if she doesn't know how to take the blue sack off, the you will need to take it off with a pair of scissors, SANITIZE them first or you could kill the baby

    2nd.

get the baby breathing, gently pat it on the back, or rub its tummy or somthing, but be careful not to break any bones!!!

if it doesnt start breathing, then you need to take a baby booger sucker, and then put it (not all the way down) but somewhat down its throat, and suck the mucus out, and if that fails,........CPR!!!!

next, once the baby is breathing, take a CLEAn towel and dry it off, then hook 'er up to the mammas boob, and your all set

    then prepare for another!!

and another thing, don't panic and ecspecially don't have more than three people helping the dog. doing either of those will stress the mother, and the pups will die before they get out.

    stay calm!!!
good luck and please let us know how it goes!!
