Can you tap into static electricity? Why don't you put a wire from pole to pole and see what happens?

Well this is a known fact, that static electricity will build up in free standing antennae wires and poles, but the moment a load is put on, the voltage collapses immediately. It would also be an invitation for a direct hellajious lightning strike, since the whole thing wouldn't be grounded for protection.

Most lightning strikes are ground to cloud, but sometimes it also is cloud to ground. Whatever, anything hooked up to those wires would be fried beyond recognition.
That's why a longwire antenna needs a lightning arrestor, if it is hooked up to any radio gear, or it should be grounded if not in use.
To the idea of drawing power from static electricity:
At best a neon bulb could be made to light up, but any real energy cannot be drawn from it, unless the wire is running close to a high power radio station, then light bulbs could be powered from the high frequency power of the transmitter.
This would be stealing energy from the radio station and would be considered illegal.
