Can I find a job teaching English abroad that would include airfare?

  • I'm thinking of going somewhere in the Pacific, but I'm pretty flexible. I'm looking for a job that includes a place to live and airfare to get over there. Is this a sensible thing to be looking for, or should I start saving up airfare now?

  • If you're heading for a high demand destination like South Korea for instance, you could haggle with the agent/school and get them to pay upfront - if their desperate enough to fill the position, it might do the trick (yes...I have done it before). It'll depend on where you're departing from of course. They'll usually make you pay for the flight, then reimburse you later.

  • If you are looking for a teaching job that would include airfare and accommodation then I would look into countries in Asia. I have friends in South Korea who are teaching and have rent and airfare paid!

Here is the catch - these countries are looking for qualified and experienced teachers, meaning at least one year experience teaching ESL and the proper qualifications.

My friends that are there each spend a year teaching in Prague (where I teach) and then set off for Korea. Armed with teaching experience, a recognized TEFL Certificate and a BA degree - they had no problem finding a school that would take care of them. And they are loving it!

So, my advise is: Get a little experience (if you don't already have it), and get your TEFL certificate - it will be a requirement (as well as a BA) in order for you to find reputable work.

I'll link the school I went to in Prague where I got my certificate. I can't say enough good things about them! :)

    Good Luck!

  • there is such an abundance of people looking to teach English, you are better off counting on paying your own airfare there. If the choice is between you and someone who can buy their own ticket, you're not getting the job. You might find somewhere that is willing to pay, but it's safest to assume you have to buy the ticket.
