Atheist, before becoming an atheist what was your religion? What made you to become an Atheist ?

  • Are you happy as an Atheist ?

  • I was about eight or nine when I found out that it was all a tremendous LIE.

  • Thankfully, I've always been a Unitarian Universalist, and an atheist. I am a very happy person, though my medical problems sometimes get me down.

  • I have identified with both Judaism and Christianity. Until I was about 15, I was a "Christian." I was the stereotypical Christian teenager who knew almost nothing about religion and philosophy. After 15, I began identifying with my Jewishness (I am, partially, ethnically Jewish). After that, I tried to find the religion that was right for me. I found that I couldn't agree with any particular religion. I decided that there wasn't a religion which offered any evidence. The more I thought about the issue, I became increasingly convinced that the existence of a supernatural being (a deity, much less) was highly improbable.

  • no religion.

yes i am the happiest person alive. i could not be happier. nothing would convince me to be religious. religion is the pits.

  • I thought I was Christian, but in reality I didn't know what it meant to be Christian. I believed in heaven/hell and a God but didn't think of what the bible said. Then again I was 9. Some of my family and friends are Christians. By Dad USED to be one of those Christian rocker kids in high school, but now he and my mom are agnostic. At age 13 I stopped thinking about God because my parents never discussed religion with me. My uncle died when I was 14. I took that death hard. He was like a brother to me. People kept saying that he is in a better place and they would see him again one day, but something in my gut told me I wouldn't. I became more agnostic with atheistic leanings then. I'm 15 and still that way. I'm still on my search for answers and hopefully I live long enough to find them!

I'm sort of unhappy to know that I will never see my loved ones again after they die. I was never really tied down in the first place by religion, so I'm not much more happier now than I was. Though I am just a bit. Its changed my view of the world. It makes me love more, judge less. It makes me want to learn!

  • Atheism is fun.

  • I was Lutheran, and Baptized Anglican, but now I'm Atheist and I'm quite happy. Everything in life is going great for me. I used to be in a depression when I did believe in God I was angry he didn't ever answer my prayers and it seemed like he hated me. But then I gess reality sorta hit one day and I realized I need to work out my problems myself, and if the all powerful God isn't going to help he most likely dosen't exist. And this is something I've been debating for awhile and I've finally decided to become an Atheist.

  • Well I was 8 so I don't think it's really fair to say I had a religion. Although my back ground is Presbyterianism.

I just realised that the idea of a god existing was really pretty silly.

    Yes, life is good.

  • I was vaguely Catholic originally. I decided it was a load of crap and looked into a bunch of other religions but they all seemed equally as nonsensical. I'm perfectly happy with my non-belief.

    Peace.

    =]

  • I'm going to answer this even though I'm not so much an atheist as not not an atheist. I've never (Praise Allah!) had a religion, though as a boy I inclined to worship the male gods of Olympus, particularly Hermes, Poseidon, Eros, Apollo, and Zeus; with a sort of fraternal fondness for Athena, and a nephew-like devotion to Hestia and Demeter. Hera is formidable, and you have to respect her (or else!), but Aphrodite, Artemis and Ares, in my opinion, are self-obsessed bores. I've never really stopped believing in them, because they are, so to speak, my "invisible companions." I know they're not real, but I enjoy their company.

  • Could the Eiffel Tower create itself?
    No.
How about the world that is infinitely more complex and perfect?
    Absolutely not.
How about the vast, expanding universe?
    No.

You know, I have NEVER seen a debate where an Atheist won. Ever.

We have 5 senses. And that's all we can get from the world. I can see, touch, taste, hear, and smell something. That's it. I'm limited. There could be a million more aspects to that thing, but I don't have the senses to experience any of them.

It's not a question of whether there's a god or not. That's never been the question.
There aren't even enough atheists to present that question.
Because you definitely didn't create yourself.

You just opened up your eyes and found yourself here. You don't even know why.

Human beings are not the highest rank of existence, and that's just something very foolish to put out.

Atheism is impossible to be proven, and SO easy to be disproven.

Now, philosophy is not an atheists favorite subject.
But take a look at just one philosophy.
One of the paradoxes of Zeno.

He proved that any movement- that includes the movement of time, molecular movement, atomic movement, the movement of a ball rolling across the street, the movement of my fingers across this keyboard, any movement- cannot exist. It can't be happening. And he proved it in a very simple, obvious way.

A man must walk from Point A to Point B

    Point A--------------------------------Point B

It is impossible for him to reach point B without crossing the middle.

    Point A--------------------------------Point B

He must reach that middle part to get to his destination.

It is impossible to reach that middle point unless he passes another point in the middle.

    Point A--------------------------------Point B

He can't reach his destination until he passes that point. But it is impossible to reach that point until he passes a point in the middle.

    Point A--------------------------------Poin... B

He can't reach his destination until he passes that point. But it is impossible to reach that point until he passes a point in the middle.

    Point A--------------------------------Poi... B

He can't reach his destination until he passes that point. But it is impossible to reach that point until he passes a point in the middle.

    Point A---------------------------------P... B

You can keep dividing that space in half to infinity.

He can never get to his destination.
I can never get to the keys on my keyboard.
I can never shut my eyes to sleep.

This also means time isn't passing.
Because in order for one second to pass, .5 of a second must pass. And in order for .5 of a second to pass .25 of a second must pass and so on.

It's all an image, because it's impossible to be happening.
Everything you see, taste, touch, smell is the image of Dunya.
    Creation.
    It's all a test.

  • Christian

Thinking, reading the bible, opening my mind

    Yes

  • I was a Catholic who considered becoming a nun.
I finally had to honestly admit to myself that there was absolutely no evidence for the existence of any gods.

I have always been happy with my life.

  • Atheists arenâ ™t made they are born, I think it's a recessive gene, Or abnormal DNA code. They are probably happy because they are completely unaware of the genetic abnormality.

  • Roman Catholic.

I became an atheist because first I started questioning my beliefs, and then I actually did some reading on the subject. I don't think anyone can approach religion with an open and critical mind and not end up at least a non-religious deist.

I'm undoubtedly happier without religion, but it's not as though atheism has made my life perfect or anything. Life has its ups and downs for everyone -- believers and non-believers alike.

  • Baptist Christian.

I moved to atheist over a period of years. My initial reason was that I realised that nobody or no thing was hearing my prayers.

  • I have a vague recollection of going to church once with my family; it was a Unitarian Church. My parents were SO cool.

Somehow, my brother became a born-again, and I have never followed any religion. Dabbled with Eastern religion, even saw some "inner light" once, but now I just believe in being kind, forgiving people, and enjoying life (the only one we will probably ever know).

    Peace all.

    ***

Oh yeah; "What made you to become an Atheist?"

A deep respect for science and the scientific method as the means for arriving at the truth.

  • I was a Baptist before becoming an Atheist/Pastafarian, and i was completely miserable. Now as an atheist, im only mildly unhappy.

As to why i became an atheist, its because i read the bible.

  • I have always been an atheist. My parents had me go to a Congregational Church to learn the rudiments of religion. I am also familiar with Roman Catholicism, and the Judaic Faith. I have never prayed, and I have never been religious.

    Later addition.
Atheist all my life and happy.

  • first off...everyone's born atheist. after which the exposure to any religious belief happens.
my parents are christians but around age 10 or so i remember starting to doubt things. those same doubts are why i'm an atheist today. i cannot reconcile the ridiculous notions of the bible and refuse to buy into it.

  • christian
    i saw through it

    yes

  • I used to be Lutheran.

There was no one thing that convinced me no gods exist. It was a long process of questioning, looking for answers, looking into the nature of various religious beliefs, and looking into the nature of belief, itself.

  • I am extremely happy to be an Atheist. I have never been happier in my life, even back when I believed. I was born RUSSIAN ORTHODOX, but raised BYZANTINE CATHOLIC and I swallowed their whole spiel hook, line and sinker. So much so, in fact, that I once considered entering the seminary. BUt I got better. Now, hardly a day goes by where I don't say THANK GOD I AM AN ATHEIST!

  • I was a Christian until I turned sixteen and gradually started de-converting.. Took me three years to become an atheist, and I went through lots of phases before that. First increasing doubt, then some kind of deism, then agnosticism. But now I feel like I am finally very sure of where I stand and what I think. Atheism ftw! =D

"What made you become an atheist?"
Hmmmm.. Good question! It wasn't a conscious decision exactly. I just started questioning my religion more and more, and eventually I realized that it didn't make sense! I got more educated. I did research, talked to people and thought through religious issues. I also read more of the bible, which made me realize what a pile of total BS it was. Figured out there was NO evidence in support of the god hypothesis whatsoever, and the utter lack of divine intervention made me draw my own conclusions... Also, it was a part of growing up, simply. I stopped trying to delude myself and began to take responsibility for my own actions instead.

"Are you happy as an Atheist?"
Yeah. Yeah, I sure am. ;)

  • Pentecostal (unbaptized).

    An awakening.

I'm happy as a pig in poo.

  • I never actually believed in god/s or religion, but I was raised by a Christian family and attended a Pentecostal church. It always seemed like fairy tales to me, and as I researched it I realized that there is no evidence that anything supernatural--including god/s--is real. I first heard the term "atheist" when I was in high school and first realized it applied to me when I was in college.

I'm happy as a human being. My atheism really has very little to do with my life except on forums like this one. I base my life around things I *do* believe, not things I don't.

  • Billions of atheists around the world and you wonder if they are happy! Sounds just a tad smug to me.

Also, I've never had a religion.

  • I was a Christian.
I studied other religions, and found Christianity just could NOT be right for me.
Then the more I studied those religions, I realized none of this crap was possible.
And yes, I'm happier as an atheist than I was as a Christian by a long shot.

  • allot of them became Atheist because when they were younger momma an Dada would wake them up early in the morning to go to Church.. and they would hate it.. so when they became teens that is when they converted to Atheism...

they say Christians are brainwashed when they are younger, but their parents till this day are still Christian.. so are the parents brainwashed? to me it seems like Satan brainwashed you guys out of Christianity...

parents are only trying to do what is best for there kids...
how often do you see a 40 year old converting to Atheism.. it always happens at younger stages of ones life..

Atheists remind me of a bunch of teenagers that think they know everything

they are in denial thinking they can hide from the truth... they want freedom and don't want to answer to anybody.. they don't want to be held accountable for their sin

  • The best cure for Christianity is actually reading the bible. Pretty much every tenet of christianity is listed within its own scriptures as abominations to god.

    Hosea 13:2 Human Sacrifice---ABOMINATION

Jeremiah 32:35 Sacrificing upon High Places, like Mt. Calvary---Abomination

Deuteronomy 13/ Matthew 23:15, Converting Peopleâ ”Abomination

    Deuteronomy 4:15-16, Defining â ˜Jesusâ ™ as god--ABOMINATION
