About American universities...?

  • Hey, I'm from Belgium and I want to come over to the US to study at university.
I have taken a look at the prices for renting an apartment or studio, but $1500 for a month is too much. I will have to sleep at the university itself, but what is it like? Like, how many people sleep in the same room? How does the system work?

  • Like the other answerer said, $1500 sounds like a lot for an apartment in all but the biggest US cities. In any case, some colleges and universities require that first-year students live in the dorms and not an off-campus apartment. These arrangements can range from two people in one room with a shared bathroom on the floor, to a suite with 4-6 people sharing a bathroom. Each college is different.

  • It depends on where you're planning on going to school. $1500 a month sounds pretty high to me unless you're planning on staying in a very big city like New York or Los Angeles. In Columbus, a fairly large city in the Midwest, you could expect to rent an apartment for $400-$700 a month depending on location and amenities. An efficiency apartment or sleeping room would be much cheaper.

University housing is usually unique to the university. You'll have to read up on your university of choice to nail that down.

My university (Ohio State) offers some different choices. At the cheapest level, you can share a room with someone and a bathroom with your entire floor. You could share a room and a bathroom with just one person for just a little bit more expense. Private rooms and bathrooms are also available for more money. The university offers suite housing, which will involve say five or six students sharing a kitchen, bathroom and living area but you might have a private sleeping room or only share with one person. There are also university apartments available which are just like ordinary apartments except they're rent controlled and inhabited by students.

Most college websites spend a lot of time talking about what sort of housing options they offer. Try checking over a few of those to see if you can find something you'd like.
