Need travel advice...Oregon to Alaska?

  • I'm moving to Alaska the beginning of November from Oregon and need some advice.
I am taking a 2 year old with me so I dont really want to do any transfers. The only non-stop leaves PDX at 9pm and gets to ANC at midnight. So its kind of late...especially in the snow to have my friend drive me the 20 min to Eagle River. My second, more inexpensive option is to drive up to Seattle and take a non-stop from there, it will be about 50 dollars cheaper per ticket and they have flights leaving every 3 hours or less, so I could get to ANC at a better time. I can't find anyone who is willing to drive us to Seattle so I was going to rent a car and do a one way trip, but is it super expensive to do a one way trip. Im just trying to figure out if its worth it for me to spend the money on the rental, while saving 100 on flying. If it works out to be even I will just drive up to Seattle.
So do you think it is cost effective to do a one way rental car from Portland to Seattle and get to ANC at a decent hour or should I just take the late night trip from Portland? This will be my son's first trip on plane and my first in 13 years. Any advice would rock!!!

  • Have you looked into Amtrak or Greyhound to Seattle? Renting a car isn't the only way up.... What about checking the newspapers for travel buddies? I lived in Camas and there were always people who were heading north to go home..... Students going up to the UW, someone who needed to share gas expenses, What about checking on Craig's List too? If you have a little extra time you may save some money getting to Seattle, and it sure would be nice to arrive at a good time for you and your son.

Hope you like Alaska. Portland is such a nice place...the Pacific Northwest is home to me! We cruised to Alaska in Sept. and I fell in love with the state. Everyone tells me that it was the end of summer, wait until it snows. It will be far different from Portland, but it sure was charming in my opinion. Good luck to you both!

  • Pay the extra $50. There are some very good PFD fares available on the web. Why did you wait until November to move up? Summer is better. Alaska can be brutal to the inexperienced and the poor planners and it can also be extremely good. I hope you make it pilgrim.
