RealNames & VoiceStream Team Up for Keywords
The service will allow subscribers to use company, brand and product names instead of long, complicated URLs to easily access content on the wireless Web.
Seattle.internet.com has learned that the system is currently in beta test in Seattle, Boston, Dallas and Kansas City. It will be commercially available across all VoiceStream markets in 2001.
To use the system, subscribers enter wireless keywords on the handset's "Go To" menu option line and are taken directly to the site specified. For example, by typing "Zagat" instead of the restaurant guide's full URL (http://wap.zagat.com), subscribers go directly to the Zagat wireless Web site.
The system also dramatically speeds locating the correct site by reducing name entry to just one or a few letters through an auto-complete feature. For example, when subscribers enter "Z" onto the "Go To" line, a list of keywords beginning with "Z" such as Zagat, ZDNet, and ZZBox appear. Users can then scroll down the list to select a site.
