A Guide to Door Locks
Published by: webmaster 2008-08-22

At one time most people felt perfectly safe to leave their homes unlocked whether they were at home or away and no one gave much thought to installing door locks on their homes. Today; however, the world is a much different place and it simply isn’t safe to leave our homes unlocked. When shopping for door locks, there are a number of factors to consider in order to insure that you purchase the right type of door lock for your needs.

When purchasing door locks, the first factor you will need to consider is whether you are purchasing the lock for an interior or exterior door because this will make a big difference in the type of lock you should purchase. Interior door locks do not necessarily need a key and are primarily intended to provide privacy rather than security to interior rooms and their occupants. The most popular type of door lock for interior rooms are the types of locks with an inset mechanism that allows you to lock or unlock the door from inside the room. When locked, the room cannot be accessed from outside because the lock can only be unlocked from the inside. This type of door lock is commonly featured on bathroom and bedroom doors.

Not all locks require keys in order to secure them; however, the level of security that you are able to achieve may seriously decrease with this type of lock. One of the best examples of this type of lock is the chain lock. With this type of lock, a chain is brought over from the facing of the door to slide through a base on the door itself. When the chain is in place, the door can only be opened a few inches without significant force applied. This type of lock can be very inexpensive, but it does not provide a strong level of security as it can be easily breached.

Another type of lock you will see on the market is the sliding door lock. This type of door lock works well for interior doors; however it is not suitable for exterior doors. When in place, the sliding door lock allows security and privacy for occupants inside the room, but it cannot be locked and accessed from outside the door.

While not seen as frequently, some door locks on the market require the entry of a numerical password in order to allow access. This type of door lock can provide a measure of security as long as the password is not breached; however, there are disadvantages related to this type of door lock. For example, it can take a bit longer to set this type of lock than other locks and there is always the possibility that the locking mechanism may not work well if electronic problems are encountered. In addition, if you happen to forget your password you will need to reset the unit before you can gain access. The flip side to this is that, in the event that you need to change who has access to your lock, you may be able to do so without having to change out the entire lock unit.

The dead bolt is the most popular form of door locks for exterior doors. One of the primary reasons for this is the fact that the dead bolt is far more secure than other types of locks. When set, it is much more difficult to break into a door with a dead bolt lock than any other type of door lock. Dead bolt locks can be installed on both wooden and metal doors. The price of dead bolt locks can vary; however, a good quality dead bolt lock can provide security and peace of mind for many years.
